Concepts exploring "history of ideas"

Memes as Cultural Compression

A meme is a compression artifact for a piece of shared social experience. Its virality is not a property of its content — it is a function of the zeitgeist it spawns into. The Tamarians on *Star Trek: TNG* spoke entirely in memes, and called it mythology. We do the same thing and call it the internet.

Continuity of the Recognition

The recognition that a person is composed — not located — keeps recurring across eras under different names. The schema changes with the substrate of the era; the underlying claim does not. The current debate over AI consciousness is one more turn of a wheel that has been turning for at least 123 years.
